# Edit cells in grid reports

Grid reports allow inline editing (by [permitted users](https://help.quickbase.com/docs/configure-permissions-for-roles#set-up-tablespecific-permissions)) of standalone and embedded reports on forms and dashboards. This article explains how to enable/disable inline editing and how to edit cells directly on a grid report.

## Enable/disable inline editing

Grid reports respect any role permissions and restrictions you currently have in place. There are also controls for builders to enable or disable inline editing at the report and widget levels.

### Standalone grid reports

Enable or disable inline editing as a default setting for all reports in a table. To do this:

1. Select a table in the sidebar.
2. Select **Settings**.
3. Select **Reports & charts**.
4. On the page bar, select **Reporting defaults** > **Default report settings**.
5. Under **Options**, choose your preference for **Editing behavior**.

You can then override the default report setting for specific reports as needed. To do this:

1. Open a standalone grid report (use the **Reports** dropdown in the page bar of a table’s home page).
2. Select the **Customize report** button in the page bar.
3. Under **Options**, choose your preference for **Editing behavior**.

### Embedded grid reports

Enable or disable inline editing for each table report widget embedded in forms and dashboards.

> [!NOTE]
> Note
>
> If inline editing is disabled in the report settings for a report selected to be displayed in a widget, the report is not editable, overriding the widget setting.

For dashboard Report widgets:

1. Unlock the dashboard using the lock button in the top right.
2. Select the 3-dot button in the top right of the Report widget. Then select **Edit**.
3. Use the checkbox next to **Allow users to edit records directly from this report**.

For grid reports embedded on forms:

1. While in edit mode, select the 3-dot button in the top right of the embedded report.
2. Select **Form element settings**.
3. In the side menu in the **Inline editing**section, use the checkbox next to **Allow users to edit records directly from this report**.

## Editable cells

Editable cells have a blue border and fill-down handle (a square in the bottom-right corner) when selected in edit mode.

## Non-editable cells

Non-editable cells have a gray border and do not have a blue fill-down handle in the bottom-right corner. In edit mode, they also display a tooltip with an explanation.

Non-editable cells include:

- Lookup fields
- Summary fields
- Formula fields
- Any field you don’t have permission to edit

### Unsaved edits

Cells with edits that have not been saved are indicated by a blue triangle in the top-left corner of the cell.

## Edit cells

To start editing a cell in a grid report, perform any of the following actions:

- Double-click an editable cell
- Select an editable cell and press **Enter**.

For standalone grid reports, these actions automatically change the report to edit mode if done in view mode. You can also enter edit mode by selecting the **Edit records** button in the page bar.

For grid reports embedded in forms, enter edit mode in the form to edit a cell.
