# Implement LDAP authentication

On Wednesday, October 15, 2021, we will officially retire LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) as a source of authentication to the Quickbase platform. For more detail, see [LDAP for single sign-on reaching End of Life on Oct 15, 2021](https://community.quickbase.com/blogs/brian-cafferelli1/2021/01/20/ldap-for-single-sign-on-reaching-end-of-life-on-oc).

Many organizations have implemented **LDAP** (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol), to let users access multiple secure directories using only their network login. [Realms](/v1/docs/realm-overview) are compatible with LDAP, saving your users the need to remember separate user names and passwords.

An added advantage to using LDAP authentication is that you can give any user who squares with your LDAP directory *approved* status in your realm ([what's approval status?](/v1/docs/set-general-user-access-levels)). This setup is a handy way to automate application access restrictions.

The LDAP server must support incoming SSL handshake requests using Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0/ Secure Socket Layer (SSL) 3.0 or above.
