# Date/time and text overlay on photos

## Overview

You have the option to place **date/time** or **text overlays** on photos taken with both the Single and the [Multi Photo fields](/fastfield/docs/multi-photo-field-video). This can help provide you with useful context about the photos, as well as useful details for recordkeeping and authentication purposes.

> This feature will only work for photos captured in the app and will not work with photos uploaded from your device.

## How to add a date/time or text overlay

1. Select your desired photo field and then select the **Photo Overlay** button in the **Settings** panel on the right.

2. Enter the **fieldkey** of your text field that you wish to use as the overlay.
  - In the example below *alpha_1* is the basic text field we will be using as the overlay:

3. Let's also add a **date/time stamp** on the photo. To do this, select that option in the settings window.

4. On the app, be sure to enter your caption **before** taking your photo. If you enter the text after, the overlay will **not** display on your photos.
