# Formatted Numeric Field (Formatted Input)

The Formatted Numeric field collects numbers in a fixed pattern, like a phone number, a ZIP code, or a date. This article covers how to add a Formatted Numeric field, choose or create its format, and configure its settings.

## How the Formatted Numeric field works

A Formatted Numeric field uses a display mask. In the mask, each `#` stands for one digit. Any other character, like a parenthesis, a dash, or a space, is added for the user as they type.

For example, a work order can ask for a *Contact Phone* with the mask `(###) ###-####`. A technician enters *5551234567*, and the app shows *(555) 123-4567*. Every phone number in your submissions then has the same format.

The Format list includes these built-in masks:

| Format | Mask |
| --- | --- |
| Date | `##/##/####` |
| DateTime | `##\##\#### ##:##` |
| US Phone | `(###) ###-####` |
| Zip+4 | `#####-####` |
| Custom | Any mask you enter |

> A new Formatted Numeric field starts with the Date mask. Choose another format to change it.

## Add a Formatted Numeric field

1. In the Form Builder, select **Add Fields** in the side bar.
2. Under Numeric, select **Formatted Numeric** to add it after the selected field. You can also drag it onto the canvas where you want it.

The field appears on the canvas as *Formatted Numeric Field*, and its field settings open on the General tab.

## Choose a format

1. In **Field Label**, enter the question users see, for example *Contact Phone*.
2. In **Format**, select a built-in format, for example **US Phone — (###) ###-####**.

The mask appears in **Display Mask**. Users see it in the empty field until they start typing.

## Create a custom format

1. In **Format**, select **Custom**.
2. In **Display Mask**, enter the pattern. Use `#` for each digit, and add any separators you need.

For example, use `(##) ####-####` for an Australian phone number, or `###-##-####` for a US Social Security number.

> You can also enter a mask in **Display Mask** directly. Format changes to Custom when the mask doesn't match a built-in format.

## Configure the field

Use the General, Behavior, and Appearance tabs in Field Settings to control how the field works.

| Tab | Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| General | Field Label | The question users see on the form |
| General | Field Key | The key that identifies the field in submissions, rules, and calculations |
| General | Format | Selects a built-in mask, or Custom |
| General | Display Mask | The pattern the app applies as users type. Each `#` is one digit |
| General | Default Value | Fills in the field each time a user starts the form |
| General | Required Field | Users must fill in the field before they can submit the form |
| General | Hint Text | Text shown in the empty field instead of the mask |
| Behavior | Hide Field | Hides the field in the app |
| Behavior | Hide Field Label | Shows the field without its label |
| Behavior | Exclude From Reports | Leaves the field's value out of reports. The value stays in the submission data |
| Behavior | Enabled | When off, the field is grayed out and users can't change it |
| Behavior | Memory Field (Persist Value) | Remembers the last submitted value and fills it in the next time the user opens the form. Learn more about [memory fields](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-memory-fields) |
| Behavior | Capture GPS Location | Records the GPS coordinates from when the field was last changed |
| Behavior | Capture Timestamp | Records the date and time the field was last changed |
| Appearance | Background Color | Gives the field a color. Learn more about [alert types](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-alert-type-field-colors) |

Select **Save Draft** to save your changes. Users see them after you select **Publish**.

## Set up the field with the Assistant

You can also ask the Assistant to add a Formatted Numeric field or change its mask.

1. Select **Assistant** in the side bar.
2. Describe what you want, for example *Add a formatted numeric field called Contact Phone after Requested By, with a US phone number mask* or *Add a Site ZIP field after Requested By with a Zip+4 mask*.
3. Send the message.

The Assistant can add, rename, and move the field, set its display mask, and make it required.

> Assistant changes aren't saved until you select **Save Draft**.
