# Location Field

The Location field records where a user is when they fill out a form, using the device's GPS. This article covers how to add a Location field and configure its settings.

## How the Location field works

A Location field shows a Capture GPS button in the FastField mobile app. When the user selects it, the app captures the device's current GPS coordinates. The app then shows the location on a map, with its coordinates and address.

For example, a work order can capture the *Location* of each job site. You can then see in every submission exactly where the work took place.

To let users choose a different spot, turn on **Allow User Defined Location**. Users can then long press on the map to select a location other than their current one.

> Other field types can record a location too. Turn on **Capture GPS Location** in the field's Behavior tab.

## Add a Location field

1. In the Form Builder, select **Add Fields** in the side bar.
2. Under Location, select **Location / GPS** to add it after the selected field. You can also drag it onto the canvas where you want it.

The field appears on the canvas as *Location / GPS Field*, and its field settings open on the General tab.

1. In **Field Label**, enter the question users see, for example *Job Site Location*.
2. To let users pick a location on the map, turn on **Allow User Defined Location**.

## Configure the field

Use the General, Behavior, and Appearance tabs in Field Settings to control how the field works.

| Tab | Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| General | Field Label | The question users see on the form |
| General | Field Key | The key that identifies the field in submissions, rules, and calculations |
| General | Allow User Defined Location | Lets users long press on the map to select a location other than their current one |
| General | Required Field | Users must capture a location before they can submit the form |
| Behavior | Hide Field | Hides the field in the app |
| Behavior | Hide Field Label | Shows the field without its label |
| Behavior | Exclude From Reports | Leaves the field's value out of reports. The value stays in the submission data |
| Behavior | Enabled | When off, the field is grayed out and users can't change it |
| Behavior | Capture Timestamp | Records the date and time the field was last changed |
| Appearance | Background Color | Gives the field a color. Learn more about [alert types](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-alert-type-field-colors) |

Select **Save Draft** to save your changes. Users see them after you select **Publish**.

## Set up the field with the Assistant

You can also ask the Assistant to add a Location field or change its settings.

1. Select **Assistant** in the side bar.
2. Describe what you want, for example *Add a location field called Job Site Location after Title, and let users choose a different location on the map*.
3. Send the message.

The Assistant can add, rename, move, and require the field. It can also turn Allow User Defined Location on or off.

> Assistant changes aren't saved until you select **Save Draft**.
