Reorder Sections and Fields

Prev Next

The order of a form shapes how quickly people can fill it out. This article covers how to reorder pages, sections, and fields in the Form Builder, and how to move fields to another section.

How form structure works

A form is built in three layers.

Layer

What it is

Page

A step in the form. Users move between pages with the next and previous controls

Section

A titled group of fields on a page

Field

A single piece of data

You can reorder pages, sections, and fields, and you can move fields to any section on any page. Reordering doesn't change data you've already collected. Existing submissions keep their values.

Reorder pages and sections

The Pages & Sections tab lists every page in the form and the sections on each page. Use it to rearrange a long form without moving through the whole canvas.

  1. In the Form Builder, select Pages & Sections in the side bar.

  1. Drag a page or section by its handle to a new position. You can drag a section onto another page.

Tip

Select a page or section in the list to jump to it on the canvas.

You can also reorder sections on the canvas. Drag the section by the handle in its header.

Reorder fields

Drag a field by its handle to a new position. A line shows where the field will land. You can drop it into any section, on any page.

  2. Select Move in the canvas toolbar.

Tip

Use the field counts in the dialog to spot sections that have grown too long.

Add pages and sections

You can add pages and sections in a few ways:

  • Add a page at the end of the form: In the Pages & Sections tab, select Page

  • Add a section to the current page: In the Pages & Sections tab, select Section

  • Add a page next to the current one: Select the add page icon next to the page name on the canvas, then select Add Page Above or Add Page Below

  • Add a section between two sections: Select the add section icon between them on the canvas

Duplicate or delete a section

  1. In the section header, select the more options icon.

  2. Select Duplicate Section or Delete Section.

Important

Deleting a section also deletes every field in it, and you can't undo it. To keep the fields, move them to another section first.

Note

A form needs at least 1 page, and each page needs at least 1 section. You can't delete the last one.

Reorder on a phone or in the app

The side bar isn't available on a phone browser or in the FastField mobile app. Select Outline in the toolbar instead to reorder pages and sections.

Reorder with the Assistant

You can also ask the Assistant to rearrange your form. It can reorder and move fields, sections, and pages, and add, duplicate, or delete them.

  1. Select Assistant in the side bar.

  2. Describe the change, for example Move the signature field to the end of the form or Split this form into three pages.

  3. Send the message.

The Assistant makes the change and tells you what it did. To reverse it, select the undo icon in the Assistant tab.

Tip

To work on specific fields, select their checkboxes, then select Assistant in the canvas toolbar. The Assistant applies your request to those fields only.

Note

Assistant changes aren't saved until you select Save Draft, and users don't see them until you select Publish. The Assistant is available when AI features are turned on for your account.
