This article covers how to add a Switch field, choose its default answer, and configure its settings. ## How the Switch field works A Switch field shows a toggle next to its label. Users tap the toggle to switch between *No* and *Yes*. The answer saves as true or false in the submission. For example, a work order can ask *Area Clean?* at the end of a job. The technician turns the switch on when the area is clean. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/switch-05-preview-example.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T02%3A43%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T03%3A43%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=UuUI6C%2FiuC2mB2bn0G4PW%2Bkp2TPUxO8DNwqO%2BMAzLgU%3D) A switch always has an answer, so it can't tell you that a question doesn't apply. When *not applicable* is a valid answer, use a [Yes/No/NA field](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-yes-no-na-three-state) instead. ## Add a Switch field 1. In the Form Builder, select **Add Fields** in the side bar. 2. Under Yes/No, select **Switch** to add it after the selected field. You can also drag it onto the canvas where you want it. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/switch-01-add-field-panel.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T02%3A43%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T03%3A43%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=UuUI6C%2FiuC2mB2bn0G4PW%2Bkp2TPUxO8DNwqO%2BMAzLgU%3D) The field appears on the canvas as *Switch Field*, and its field settings open on the General tab. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/switch-02-new-field-settings.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T02%3A43%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T03%3A43%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=UuUI6C%2FiuC2mB2bn0G4PW%2Bkp2TPUxO8DNwqO%2BMAzLgU%3D) ## Choose the default answer 1. In **Field Label**, enter the question users see, for example *Area Clean?* 2. Under Switch Settings, select a **Default Value**. Select *No* to start the switch off, or *Yes* to start it on. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/switch-03-type-settings.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T02%3A43%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T03%3A43%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=UuUI6C%2FiuC2mB2bn0G4PW%2Bkp2TPUxO8DNwqO%2BMAzLgU%3D) ## Configure the field Use the General, Behavior, and Appearance tabs in Field Settings to control how the field works. | Tab | Setting | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | | General | Field Label | The question users see on the form | | General | Field Key | The key that identifies the field in submissions, rules, and calculations | | General | Default Value | The answer the switch starts with, Yes or No. The default is No | | General | Required Field | Users must answer before they can submit the form | | Behavior | Hide Field | Hides the field in the app | | Behavior | Hide Field Label | Shows the switch without the field label | | Behavior | Exclude From Reports | Leaves the field's value out of reports. Select **Assistant** in the side bar. 2. Describe what you want, for example *Add a Switch field called Area Clean after Description and make it required*. 3. Send the message. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/switch-06-assistant.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T02%3A43%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T03%3A43%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=UuUI6C%2FiuC2mB2bn0G4PW%2Bkp2TPUxO8DNwqO%2BMAzLgU%3D) The Assistant can add the field, make it required, and add a field rule. For example, it can show a comment field when the answer is *No*. Set the **Default Value** in Field Settings. To work on one field, select the Assistant icon on the field. Then choose an action such as **Configure Rules**. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/switch-07-field-assistant(1).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T02%3A43%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T03%3A43%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=UuUI6C%2FiuC2mB2bn0G4PW%2Bkp2TPUxO8DNwqO%2BMAzLgU%3D) > [!NOTE] > Note > > Assistant changes aren't saved until you select **Save Draft**. ## What's next - [Yes/No/NA field](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-yes-no-na-three-state) - [Required acknowledgment field](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-required-acknowledgement) - [Field type overview](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-field-type-overview)
