This article covers how to add a Yes/No/NA field, configure its settings, and score the answers. ## How the Yes/No/NA field works A Yes/No/NA field shows a button for each answer. Users tap one instead of typing. You can include the *N/A* button when *not applicable* is a valid answer, or leave it out. For example, a safety inspection can ask whether a fire extinguisher is present. Inspectors tap **Yes**, **No**, or **N/A** for each item, so the answers stay consistent. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/yesno-03-preview-example(2).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T01%3A36%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T02%3A36%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=IffjiprVrgYFBGB7v4iP84%2FQEDjRsAYV4PujUQE0Qus%3D) For a simple on or off answer without N/A, you can also use the [Switch field](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-switch-yes-no). ## Add a Yes/No/NA field 1. In the Form Builder, select **Add Fields** in the side bar. 2. Under Yes/No, select **Yes/No/NA** to add it after the selected field. You can also drag it onto the canvas where you want it. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/yesno-01-add-field(2).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T01%3A36%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T02%3A36%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=IffjiprVrgYFBGB7v4iP84%2FQEDjRsAYV4PujUQE0Qus%3D) The field appears on the canvas as *Yes/No/NA Field*, and its field settings open on the General tab. ## Set up the answers 1. In **Field Label**, enter the question users see, for example *Fire Extinguisher Present*. 2. To show the *N/A* button, turn on **Allow N/A**. A new field shows only *Yes* and *No*. 3. To preselect an answer, select it in **Default Value**. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/yesno-02-settings(2).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T01%3A36%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T02%3A36%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=IffjiprVrgYFBGB7v4iP84%2FQEDjRsAYV4PujUQE0Qus%3D) ## Configure the field Use the General, Behavior, and Appearance tabs in Field Settings to control how the field works. | Tab | Setting | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | | General | Field Label | The question users see on the form | | General | Field Key | The key that identifies the field in submissions, rules, and calculations | | General | Default Value | Preselects *Yes*, *No*, or *N/A* when users open the form. The default is *No Default* | | General | Allow N/A | Adds an *N/A* button before *Yes* and *No* | | General | Required Field | Users must select an answer before they can submit the form | | Behavior | Hide Field | Hides the field in the app | | Behavior | Hide Field Label | Shows the buttons without the field label | | Behavior | Exclude From Reports | Leaves the field's value out of reports. The value stays in the submission data | | Behavior | Enabled | When off, the field is grayed out and users can't change it | | Behavior | Capture GPS Location | Records the GPS coordinates from when the field was last changed | | Behavior | Capture Timestamp | Records the date and time the field was last changed | | Behavior | Field Rules | Shows, hides, or changes other fields based on the answer | | Appearance | Background Color | Gives the field a color. Learn more about [alert types](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-alert-type-field-colors) | Select **Save Draft** to save your changes. Users see them after you select **Publish**. ## Score the answers Each answer is saved as a number: *1* for Yes, *0* for No, and *-1* for N/A. Use these numbers in a Calculation field to score an inspection or a survey. For example, say 3 fields have the keys *tri_1*, *tri_2*, and *tri_3*. To count their Yes answers, add a Calculation field with this script: ```plaintext var score = 0; if ($tri_1$ == 1) { score += 1; } if ($tri_2$ == 1) { score += 1; } if ($tri_3$ == 1) { score += 1; } return score; ``` To give a Yes more weight, change *score += 1* to a higher number, such as *score += 2*. ## Set up the field with the Assistant You can also ask the Assistant to add Yes/No/NA fields. 1. Select **Assistant** in the side bar. 2. Describe what you want, for example *Add a Yes/No/NA field called Guards in Place after Description, with N/A allowed*. 3. Send the message. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/dd260e4e-10bb-4b66-8fb3-5504c272b904/Images/Documentation/yesno-04-assistant(2).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-30T01%3A36%3A00Z&se=2026-10-30T02%3A36%3A00Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=IffjiprVrgYFBGB7v4iP84%2FQEDjRsAYV4PujUQE0Qus%3D) The Assistant can allow N/A, set a default answer, and make the field required. > [!NOTE] > Note > > Assistant changes aren't saved until you select **Save Draft**. ## What's next - [Switch field](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-switch-yes-no) - [Rating field](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-rating-selector) - [Create an inspection form](/fastfield/docs/en/form-builder-create-an-inspection-form)
