January 2019 Release Notes

Happy New Year from all of us at Quick Base! This month our release focuses on our simplicity theme with the following new features:

  • Enhanced grouping in report builder
  • Phase 1: Type-ahead search picker for new apps

We’re also releasing scroll and load forms and easier importing through Workato.


Enhanced Reports & Charts panel section of report builder

We’ve enhanced and reintroduced the option to assign a group for your report directly in the report builder. This section of report builder now has a cleaner, more modern interface plus clearer labeling and instructional text.

Report groups make it easier for users to find the report they need quickly. For example, you might create a group for metrics reports, another for recent deals, and a third group for quarterly reports. While building a new report, users can assign the report to a group.

Phase 1: Type-ahead search picker for new apps

Our new type-ahead search picker for parent records is now available for all new apps. When you create a new app, you can type for a powerful search of all the data used to select a related record.

Users can intuitively search for the right related data with a better display of record details.

Also, when you choose Browse the cursor or focus defaults to the Search field in the Select box. This change also applies to the current picker in existing apps. If you’ve pre-searched using the new type-ahead search picker, we will pre-filter and only show the results from your initial search.

Note: To enable type-ahead search picker for your existing apps, you can participate in early access (see the Coming Soon section for more information).

Faster loading with new scroll and load forms

Speed up your apps with forms that load the key information first, then fill in the details as you scroll or when you select a tab. Complex forms load more quickly, even in your largest Quick Base apps, now that embedded reports and charts are generated just when users navigate to them.

This feature is enabled by default for each form. If necessary, you can change the setting for a form or the entire app.

Easier import through Workato

Now in Workato, you can update records using an import without needing to provide values for the key field, which is typically the Record ID. You can select any field designated as “must be unique” for your merge.

We released this feature previously through an API and through the Quick Base user interface; now, it is available through Workato.

Note: Workato is a third-party integration service. To use the import through Workato feature, you will need a separate Workato account.

Automations: Modify records action

Beginning Jan. 16, modify records actions within an Automation will edit records in bulk instead of one at a time. This means that automations that use a modify action to edit more than one record at a time will combine those changes into one API call. If your automation uses multiple modify actions or is started due to a bulk change it will still do one API call per Action and/or record changed. The reason for this change is to make your automations significantly more efficient and prevent some “rate threshold limit” errors from happening when you have an automation that triggers another automation.

Note: If you are using a modify action to trigger email notifications with a custom message, you should make sure the notification is set up to properly use the multiple record version of the email notification. More about setting up multiple record notifications.

Updated Quick Base Help

Quick Base Help now has a cleaner, more modern look that is consistent with our product. This redesign is part of a larger effort to revamp our user assistance to make it easier to find the guidance you’re looking for. The redesign also includes the API Guide.

Release notes are now part of this upgraded site, including a page that links to all release notes dating back to 2011.

The new Release Notes home also includes a print option for those who want to print to a PDF to distribute internally.

  • Links in Quick Base notification emails now default to using https:// instead of http://.

Coming Soon--Early access

Power BI Certified Connector

If you use Microsoft Power BI for sharing data visualization and insights, soon you can integrate more easily with Quick Base using a new certified connector.

The connector is scheduled for Microsoft Power BI’s next release on February 11, 2019.

To try out this connector in early access, you can set up a custom connector through Power BI.

Note: Microsoft Power BI is a third-party vendor. To use this new connector, you’ll need a separate Power BI account.

Phase 2: Type-ahead search picker for existing apps

Our type-ahead search picker for selecting parent records continues in early access this month for all existing apps. Type for a powerful search of all the data used to select a related record.

As part of developing this improved search picker, we are also working to improve the way forms work with reference and proxy fields. In the rare instances where you have both a reference and proxy field on the same form, we will carry the field value you select for one over to the other so they are consistent.

Tip: As a best practice, forms should include either a reference field or a proxy field, but not both.

Mobile app session management

Available for Platform and above plans

Early access continues for admins to set different session lengths for users who log into the Quick Base mobile app than users who log in on their desktop or through a mobile browser.

In the Sign-In Policies section of the Policies page of the Admin console, admins can specify the number of minutes before a mobile app user must manually enter their password to log in again.

Limited early access—custom data validation

We are in the early stages of developing custom data validation and are looking for a few participants that are a good fit for our testing at this time.

Custom data validation will allow you to validate Quick Base data based on custom business rules. Builders can use our formula language to set custom conditions and custom error text output per table.

Custom data validation ensures consistent validation across workflows. In limited early access, it’s available for grid edit as well as adding or editing single records using a form or API. We plan to expand it to imports, moving cards on a Kanban report, and dragging-and-dropping to adjust the duration of events on a calendar report.

What’s fixed in Quick Base?

We continue to focus on quality. Below are the issues we fixed this month.

Note: Platform security, billing changes, back-end tooling, and performance are all ongoing commitments. Each release may include changes in these areas.

All characters in the search box above reports now consistently display correctly as you type your search. Also, you can now use the custom URL generated by your search as you would any other URL, such as emailing it to a colleague or bookmarking it for future reference.


We fixed an issue with the display of the Used In column in the CSV file when you export from the User Tokens page of the Admin Console.


Kanban reports that are created based on a multi-choice field that has field values with commas now work properly.


When you access automations from Table Settings, you will now return to the table home page when you exit instead of the app home page.


Bulk searches in the Users page of the Admin Console now work correctly if they include an extra space before or after the search term.
